By approving tax-increment financing (TIF) for Dewhirst Properties’ renovation of the Daylight Building, we are meeting that mission.
The Daylight Building, located downtown at the corner of Union and Walnut – and the first headquarters to TVA – is a historic downtown building that at one time was on the chopping block and slated for demolition.
Dewhirst is breathing new life into the building and in the process bringing about 34 affordable residential apartments to downtown Knoxville. With rent ranging from around $600 to $1,200 a month, the apartments will bring a diverse demographic to downtown.
The apartments will range in size from studio to two-bedrooms and include anywhere from 500- to 1,400-square-feet. They will feature large windows and a great location, which are hard to find in downtown. We expect renters to snap them up when they come on the market sometime around August 2010.
Our downtown continues to make great strides, and KCDC is pleased to help support another great project.
