A Facelift for Five Points

Over the past three years, KCDC has talked with residents of Walter P. Taylor Homes and members of the Five Points community about our commitment to revitalize the area. We’ve also shared our plans with elected officials.
I am happy to report that Mayor Bill Haslam recently announced that the city of Knoxville has included $800,000 in next year’s budget to begin the process of seeking federal HOPE VI funds to go forward on this exciting project.

I am happy to report that Mayor Bill Haslam recently announced that the city of Knoxville has included $800,000 in next year’s budget to begin the process of seeking federal HOPE VI funds to go forward on this exciting project.
This is a great first step, but it is just that – a first step. We’re a long way from actually starting the project. If we are successful in receiving HOPE VI and other funds, we look forward to transforming the Five Points community much like we did Mechanicsville. The renovations there attracted more private investment that brought companies, jobs and more private homes to the neighborhood.
An investment in improving public housing is really an investment in improving the entire community. It strengthens the community; creates a sense of pride in the neighborhood and reduces density, improving the quality of life for all.
This process is just beginning, but it sure feels good to be out of the starting blocks.
KCDC’s mission is to improve and transform neighborhoods and communities by providing quality affordable housing, advancing development initiatives and fostering self-sufficiency. For more information, call (865) 403-1100 or visit http://www.kcdc.org.
