Happy Holiday Gatherings

December 21, 2009

I love sharing stories with family and friends over the holidays. It’s gathering together over a meal and reminiscing about Christmases past that makes the holidays special.

Whether or not family is nearby, KCDC residents have the opportunity to share this holiday tradition with one another. Our resident associations take special care in organizing a holiday lunch or dinner at each site, and they are always festive occasions where residents gather and share treasured memories over a special holiday meal. They often have entertainment, carolers or musicians. But sometimes it is just the opportunity to spend time with others that makes the event special.

The residents at Cagle Terrace are planning a Christmas dinner for this evening in the social hall. Anderson Farms of Corryton will be catering the meal at a cost of only $5. What warmed my heart was seeing many of the residents chip in an extra $5 to cover the cost of someone who might not be able to afford the dinner. Every single resident who wishes to be there will be able to attend. That is the way a true community works. I am so pleased that the residents of Cagle Terrace have such a strong and giving community. What better people to celebrate the holidays with than caring neighbors.
The folks at Northgate Terrace had a different plan for their event. The residents enjoyed a pot luck supper on Friday night, sharing each other’s favorite holiday recipes.

Many of our residents would be alone over the holidays if not for the companionship of their neighbors. We are fortunate to have such great association leaders who help everyone feel like part of the family.

If you know of someone in your neighborhood will be spending the holidays alone this year, reach out to them. Gather neighbors together and share some holiday stories. Spread the warmth and cheer of the holiday season throughout our community. That’s what being a neighbor is all about.

KCDC’s mission is to improve and transform neighborhoods and communities by providing quality affordable housing, advancing development initiatives and fostering self-sufficiency. For more information, call 865-403-1100 or visit http://www.kcdc.org.
